About Blinking Mural

Blinking is a stop motion mural by Skount, painted in layers on the same wall in Amsterdam. Each iteration was photographed to create a seamless looping animation. The project goes beyond visual experimentation, inviting reflection on how we perceive the world, how our attention shifts, and how identity forms in moments of pause and continuity.

  • The Psychology and Philosophy Behind Blinking

Blinking captures the subtle rhythms of human perception. Rather than a constant stream, our attention flickers, moments of focus interrupted by gaps. This mural mirrors that pattern, appearing, disappearing, and re-emerging in layers that invite viewers to experience the space between presence and absence.
Within this threshold, the mind reconstructs meaning and reshapes identity, offering a moment of reflection and renewed perception.

Painting as Process: A Stop Motion Animation

Instead of a single finished image, Skount repeatedly repainted the eyes with small variations. Each stage was documented in photographs, producing a frame-by-frame stop motion sequence.
Every layer subtly persisted beneath the next, like traces of memory or thought. The result is a mural that evolves continuously, echoing the non-linear flow of human experience, composed of loops, transitions, and returns.

    Stop Motion + Muralism

With Blinking, Skount combines traditional mural painting with stop motion techniques, transforming the wall into a dynamic visual loop.
The mural evolves over time, reflecting how ideas are revisited, perspectives shift, and narratives are constantly reconstructed. It is not a static artwork, but a cycle of perception and transformation.
